The End of an Era

Posted by Andrea

There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven. (Ecclesiastes 3:1)

It’s 2:00 pm in the afternoon. Do you know where your children are?

Up until this week, I could tell you with 100% certainty exactly where both of my children were. They were in their beds taking naps, of course! However, today things are much less certain. At 2:00 pm, Sugar Plum is taking an afternoon nap, but Sweet Pea is WIDE AWAKE and could be anywhere in the house. Yikes!

A great era has come to an end in the Thorpe household. Sweet Pea’s daily nap is now a thing of the past. I can’t say I’m surprised. All my mommy friends warned me that this day would come and many of them were surprised it hadn’t come sooner. My mother told me napless days were as certain as death and taxes. In fact, I had already seen the handwriting on the wall and I didn’t need the prophet Daniel to interpret its meaning.

Today, I pondered how to respond to these napless afternoons appropriately and arrived at three decisions.

  1. I will not complain about this new phase of our lives. (Please note that on a bad day, I will probably slip up and utter a complaint. If I do, inform me that you’ve read this entry and are holding me accountable!)
  2. I will embrace the readjustment of my daily schedule as a great opportunity to learn how to use my time more effectively. (I’m sure this means I’ll have to get up earlier each morning and that we’ll be eating a few more Crock Pot meals each week until I get the kinks in my chore schedule worked out!)
  3. I will enjoy the newly provided one on one time Sweet Pea and I now have. While Sugar Plum naps, Sweet Pea and I will enjoy quality time together.

Rather than getting upset or trying to hold on to the past, I’ll fondly remember the season that has just passed and welcome the new and no doubt exciting season on the horizon. I’ll keep you posted!
