Lights Out!

“For this reason you also must be ready; for the Son of Man is coming at an hour when you do not think He will. (Matthew 24:44)
We returned home yesterday around 7:00 pm and found that the electricity was out in our neighborhood. Our first clue came when we were unable to open the garage door. The second clue was the flicker of candles in our neighbors’ windows. Thankfully we carry full sets of keys with us and we were able to unlock the storm door and enter the house through front door (something we haven’t done in ages!)
Sweet Pea was particularly distressed to know that the electricity was out as now she understands that electricity is what powers our TV and her night light.
Sugar Plum was unphased by the lack of electricity. She was tired from a long day, a little thrown off by the time change, and just glad that it was finally getting dark.
JT noted that we need another flashlight and batteries larger than AA size. (AA is great for Fisher Price toys, but not so great for large flashlights!) More importantly, he finally realized that all the candles his wife keeps around the house are actually worth holding on to.
I discovered that our family is not ready for an emergency. Later today, I’ll be visiting Ready America, an informative website sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security, to make sure our family is truly prepared to face an emergency.
Though JT and I thought it would have been nice to enjoy a true candlelight dinner together, we were thankful that the electricity returned quickly. Neither one of us was looking forward to spending an evening in the dark with young children who are afraid of the dark!
