Gardening season is well underway! All of our plants are nestled into their raised beds and they’re thriving. We haven’t harvested very much yet, because God is still growing our gardening goodies. However, we’re looking forward to feasting on fresh homegrown produce all summer long.
I know a few people who would love to enjoy vegetables they’ve grown themselves, but they don’t want to fuss with dirt or they have no space for gardening. If you’re one of those people, there’s hope for you. You can partake in the glory of gardening by using planters or other containers.
Creating a trio of pizza planters is a wonderful way to garden. Pizza planters are simple containers that grow the ingredients you’d find on a pizza. Once the vegetables and herbs get growing, harvest them and make your own pizzas at home…all summer long.
Because it’s so late in the growing season, I don’t recommend trying to grow anything from seed as it will take too long to grow. Head over to your local garden center or home improvement store and buy plants that have already started to grow. You’ll be able to harvest and enjoy sooner.
Here are the three planters I recommend:
Tomato planter: Most garden centers have tomatoes in planters already. You can pick one up for between $10-$15. Place it in a sunny space and keep it watered. It won’t take long for the tomatoes to ripen and you’ll be able to use them to make homemade pizza sauce.
Pepper planter: Pepper plants also come in planters, so there’s no work for you to do. You can also choose among a wide variety of peppers. Once the peppers are home, simply slide the pepper planter beside the tomato planter and let it grow. In a short time, you’ll have plenty peppers to add to your sausage pizza.
Herb planter: This one is my favorite because you can grow a few different herbs in one planter. In addition to basil and oregano, I add thyme, parsley, and even cilantro. (While you’re here, check out this yummy BBQ Chicken Pizza that uses cilantro.) Creating this planter will take a little bit of messing about in the dirt, but not much. This awesome video from Six Minute Style shows you exactly how to prepare an herb planter.
Gardening is a great family project so ask everyone to help. Round up the family, go shopping, and add a set of pizza planters to your yard, deck, or patio. I’m sure your tastebuds will thank you!
